AFMI DEGREE SHOW | LAURIE GROVES BATHS, GOLDSMITHS

Three-channel live video installation, (3:4), hand-processed 16mm film & digital iphone video, black&white; five-channel sound.

Call On Me, Me, Me sets out to alchemize the relationships between three generations of fathers and sons. Through a series of overlapping interviews, the artist and their father dissolve the boundaries that have separated them as men, weaving together in their place a sonic tapestry of possibility that shimmers with the potential of re-interpreting their genders, histories, and bodies.

Call On Me, Me, Me | Goldsmiths AFMI 2024 Degree Show

Three alchemically-inspired, somatic screendances interpolate this process. Guided by archival family materials, ancestral landscapes/architectures, and an inherited transcendental impulse, the artist attempts to imagine and embody their ancestors’ and their own masculine pasts. The performance scores play with the possibilities for expressing and transforming embodied trauma, shame-based relationships, and homogenous identities.

Created initially on a combination of hand-processed 16mm film and digital iPhone video, the installation videos play off live software to shape a work that will never repeat itself, an alchemical process that is as incomplete, performative, and trans-mutational as the relationships it articulates. The work is currently being adapted into a virtual simulation and a single-channel edit.
